Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes (c. 1598–1602), a masterpiece of Italian Baroque, depicts the biblical widow decapitating the drunken Assyrian general Holofernes. Rediscovered in 1950, it is housed in Rome's Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica. Recent analysis, including the 2017–2018 'Dentro Caravaggio' exhibition, suggests a 1602 date based on light-based preparatory sketches.
